BEHIND
THE NAME:
THE
FITZGERALD

According to historical texts, F. Scott Fitzgerald moved into Tryon’s Oak Hall Hotel in January of 1937. While living in Tryon, Fitzgerald’s friends Hemingway and Wolfe visited him and attended many socials around the area. He took in the mountain air, penned short stories and enjoyed the simple pleasures of the town including its ice cream at the Missildine’s Pharmacy while waiting on a job offer from MGM movie studios. The poem he wrote is on a plaque at the owner’s shop, which used to be the Pharmacy and is now The Nest Artisan Market at 13 S. Trade Street. This venue is a nod to his legacy and a continuation of Tryon's thriving social society.
